After a national call from Nuon to nominate scary bicycle tunnels in the Netherlands for a makeover, the tunnel on the cycle route to the Aetsveld district of Weesp received the majority of votes.
The tunnel in Weesp is one of the makeovers that Nuon realised in the Netherlands. The campaign is part of the 'Energy is the opportunity to change something' campaign, which was launched in Almere. In this way Nuon wants to stimulate positive changes for its customers and society. Research has shown that one in five people know of a poorly lit or deteriorated bicycle tunnel and are afraid to cycle through one. The tunnel at Burgerpoort in Almere was described as unsafe, poorly lit and, like most bicycle tunnels, drab. Together with the municipality of Almere, the first step was to look at the lighting. A lighting recommendation showed that instead of the existing five, 18 light points were needed. In addition, the tunnel had to be made more attractive.
